Libbie Stinson, Aged 12 Years, Falls Head First Into a Cistern

Yesterday afternoon, Libbie Stinson, 12 years of age, went to the cistern, just back of the house, to draw a pail of water.  The cistern is about 9 feet deep, and to reach the water, which was somewhat below the top, she had to bend over considerably.  While so doing, she lost her balance and pitched head first into the cistern.

Charely Fowler, who sat on the back stoop of the Foster Place, happened to look over, and catching a glance at the spectacle of female garments and feet disappearing into the cistern, gave an alarm, and rushing to the spot, was just in time to grab the girl by the foot, and nearly fell in himself.

When brought out she was almost unconscious, having in the fall struck her head upon the stone on the cistern, cutting a gash in the side of her head near the ear.  She was promptly attended to, and is again around again all right.  But it was very fortunate that Fowler happened to see the accident; otherwise she certainly would have been drowned.
