Death by Drowning

DeWitt C., the 5 year old child of Charles and Ada Drum, was drowned Wednesday afternoon in the Union pond.  The little fellow, in company with another small boy, were amusing themselves on the ice that morning, when the mother of the other child came and took her boy into the house, and told the little Drum boy that he had better go back home.  Instead of doing so, however, he continued along in the creek, where he came across Emory Watson's circle and began chasing ducks to see them slip on the ice.  The ducks moved on toward an open space, where the current had worn through, the child following close behind, and not realizing the danger, came on to the ice and broke in.  He was missed about noon and search was made for him all the afternoon.  The water was drawn off the pond and later that evening, Nick Bradshaw discovered the body, and fetched ... and brought it up ...
